The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show : a (honest) review

Ci avevano promesso un grande spettacolo.
E infatti non sono mancati diversi colpi di scena (o meglio dire imprevisti?).

They promised a great show. And actually there have been many twists (or should we say unexpected events?).

Come vi avevamo anticipato, il Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017, registrato pochi giorni fa a Shanghai, verrà trasmesso domani sera, 28 novembre, sulla CBS e noi siamo qui ad offrirvi la miglior guida alla visione che troverete sul web (A.A.A. cercasi umiltà)!
Ma partiamo subito con la nostra recensione: lo show è stato all’altezza delle aspettative? E’ andato tutto liscio come l’olio?
Quasi.
Il trasloco dello show a Shanghai ha provocato non pochi problemi: visti negati, rigide limitazioni alla stampa ed ai blogger invitati all’evento ed addirittura artisti musicali banditi dalla China a tempo indefinito.

As we revealed, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017, recorded a few days ago in Shanghai, will be broadcast tomorrow night on November 28th on CBS and we are here to offer you the best viewing guide you will find on the web (A.A.A. looking for modesty)!
But let’s go straight to our review: did the show live up to expectations? Did it go as smoothly as honey?
Almost.
Shifting the show to Shanghai caused a number of problems: denied visas, strict restrictions for press and bloggers invited to the event, and even musicians banned indefinitely from China.

C’è chi dice che la top model brasiliana voglia dedicarsi al cinema, ma a noi mancherà comunque.

At this point we were already in the middle of our bucket of pop corn, when BAM another indiscretion became reality: Alessandra Ambrosio dumps Victoria’s Secret after 11 years !!!
Some say that the Brazilian top model wants to commit herself to the cinema; we will miss her anyway.

Continue modifiche anche sull’offerta musicale, che alla fine trova i suoi 4 protagonisti: Harry Styles, Miguel, Jane Zhang e Leslie Odom Jr.

Sembra una scelta dell’ultimo minuto e magari lo è stata, ma non ci disperiamo perché forse è la volta buona che l’attenzione sarà dove deve essere: no, non sui fisici delle modelle, ma sul FASHION!!!

Come vi abbiamo anticipato, quest’anno Victoria’s Secret non ha badato a spese per assicurarsi i migliori artisti e oh yes, la maison BALMAIN, con la quale lancerà il 29 novembre un sexy ed aggressiva mini collezione.
Quindi che ne dite se diamo un’occhiate ai vari segmenti dello show?

It seems to be a last minute choice and maybe it was, but we do not despair because maybe it’s a good time that attention will be where it should be: no, not on models’ bodies, but on FASHION !!!

As we mentioned earlier this year, Victoria’s Secret did not mind costs to guarantee the best artists, included BALMAIN, with which it will launch  a sexy and aggressive mini collection on November 29th. So would like to have a look at the various parts of the show?

PUNK ANGELS: VS x BALMAIN

Il segmento più lungo dello show, con ben 22 look disegnati dal direttore creativo di Balmain Olivier Rousteing, avrebbe dovuto chiudere lo show, ma pare proprio che sia stato registrato come segmento di apertura. Le modelle sfilano indossando giacche di pelle iper decorate, ali piene di spille da balia e lunghi mantelli in tartan: è così che va in scena la capsule collection Vs x Balmain.

The longest segment of the show, with 22 appearances designed by Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing, should have been the closing one, but seems to have been recorded as an opening segment. The models walked down the runway wearing sophisticated leather jackets, wings filled with safety pins and long tartan cloaks – this is how the Vs x Balmain capsule collection had its debut.

Esagerata, vistosa e sexy : è chiaro che la lingerie è stata disegnata per essere mostrata.
Da notare anche la nuova configurazione della passerella, che ha permesso alle modelle di sfilare in coppia: well done VS!

Ad aprire lo show c’era ovviamente lei: Candice Swanepoel, più splendete che mai dopo la maternità.

Exaggerated, glamorous and sexy: it is clear that the lingerie has been designed to be shown.
Also note the new layout of the catwalk, which allowed the models to parade in pairs: well done VS!

To open the show there was obviously her: Candice Swanepoel, more radiant than ever after maternity.

PORCELAIN ANGELS

From hard to soft: salutiamo borchie e pelle per fare posto ad un’intera selezione di tessuti interamente dipinti a mano (e solo per questo Victoria’s Secret merita il nostro rispetto). Il tema è chiaramente quello dei vasi di porcellana e le ricche decorazioni che portano con sé.

From hard to soft: say goodbye to studs and leather and welcome a whole selection of hand-painted fabrics (and only for this Victoria’s Secret deserves our respect). The theme is clearly that of porcelain pots and the rich decorations that carry on them.

Porcelain Angels è sicuramente un buon segmento, anche se è mancato un vero momento wow: che l’uso limitato dei colori abbia appiattito l’effetto finale?

Porcelain Angels is definitely a good segment, although there is no real wow moment: may the limited use of colors have flattened the final effect?

A WINTER’S TALE

Ho sentimenti contrastanti verso questo segmento: una parte di me sa che non può mancare il tema della neve e dell’inverno, dall’altra sento che riproponendolo tutti gli anni finiranno con l’esaurire le idee. E secondo noi siamo già al limite con le novità.

I have mixed feelings about this segment: a part of me knows that the theme of snow and winter cannot be missed, on the other hand I feel that proposing it year after year will end with the exhaustion of ideas. And according to us, there is little margin for innovation.

Probabilmente l’avrebbe evitato la bellissima Ming Xi, che purtroppo è scivolata lungo la passerella, ma poco importa perché se l’è cavata benissimo.

MILLENNIAL NATION

Ed eccoci alla pecora nera delle collezioni Victoria’s Secret: Pink, la linea dedicata alle giovanissime.
Per anni questo segmento è sempre stato un mezzo disastro annunciato, un po’ per mancanza di immaginazione, un po’ per mancanza di visione generale.
C’era sempre un elemento dissonante e il look delle modelle risultavano tendenzialmente assurdi (ricordiamo l’imbarazzante segmento del 2015 dedicato alle Emoticons).
Com’è andata quest’anno? molto meglio.
Forse perché quest’anno l’ispirazione arriva da sfilate reali di altri marchi e non da un tema astratto e autoreferenziale.

And here we are at the black sheep of the Victoria’s Secret collections: Pink, the line dedicated to the young.
For years this segment has always been an announced disaster, somewhat lacking in imagination, a bit because of lack of general point of view.
There was always a dissonant element and the look of the models seemed absurd (remember the embarrassing segment of 2015 dedicated to Emoticons).
How has this year gone? Far better.
Perhaps because this year inspiration comes from real shows of other brands and not from an abstract and self-referential theme.

La direzione creativa è chiaramente quella dello sportswear e ci sembra una scelta saggia, considerato che Victoria’s Secret ha rinunciato a produrre costumi da bagno per concentrarsi maggiormente sui cosiddetti capi da palestra.

The creative direction is clearly the one of sportswear and it seems to us a wise choice, given that Victoria’s Secret has given up producing bathing suits to focus more on the so-called gym clothes.

GODDESSES

Ispirato alle dee dell’Olimpo, in questo magico segmento Victoria’s Secret ci propone corone d’alloro e lunghi drappi fluttuanti: un buon segmento anche se fin troppo letterale se vogliamo. Per lo meno non hanno ricostruito un tempio greco sullo sfondo alla Chanel…

Inspired by the goddesses of Olympus, in this magical segment, Victoria’s Secret proposes laurel wreaths and long floating drapes: a good segment, though far too literal if we want. At least they did not rebuild a Chanel-like Greek temple in the background…

E’ qui che lo show presenta il suo gioiello più importante: il Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra indossato dal’angelo di Victoria’s Secret Lais Riberio.

This is where the show features its most important jewel: the Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra worn by Victoria’s Secret Angel Lais Riberio.

NOMADIC ADVENTURE

A chiudere la sfilata un segmento fatto di suggestioni: Victoria’s Secret ci porta a fare un viaggio in terre lontane, piene di colori e vitalità.

To close the runway show, a segment made up of suggestions: Victoria’s Secret takes us on a journey to distant lands full of colors and vitality.

E’ probabile che il tema del viaggio venga riproposto anche nei prossimi anni…ma finché è fatto bene non ci lamentiamo.

It is likely that the theme of the journey will be presented again in the coming years… but as long as it’s well done we do not complain.

E’ in questa parte dello show che Victoria’s Secret presenta l’annuale look realizzato in collaborazione con Swarovski: quest’anno l’onore è toccato all’angelo svedese di Victoria’s Secret Elsa Hosk. Ignorate il copri-spalle, perché sono le ali il vero gioiello.

In this part of the show Victoria’s Secret presents the annual look made in collaboration with Swarovski: this year the honor was given to the Swedish Victoria’s Secret Angel Elsa Hosk. Just ignore the shrug, the wings are the real gem.

Nota di merito anche al look scintillante di Alessandra Ambrosio, che saluta così la passerella che l’ha resa famosa in tutto il mondo.

A commendation is also deserved by the glittering look of Alessandra Ambrosio, who said goodbye to the runway that made her famous all over the world.

Tutto sommato sembra che lo show si stato all’altezza delle aspettative, anche se resta da giudicare la parte musicale, vera incognita dello show.
Ci sembra doveroso mandare i nostri complimenti al designer Brian Atwood che anche quest’anno ha regalato allo show un’invidiabile selezione di calzature.

All in all, it seems that the show has been up to expectations, even though it remains to judge the true, unknown part of the show.
It seems right to send our congratulations to the designer Brian Atwood who also this year has given the show an enviable selection of footwear.

Brian, la proposta di matrimonio del nostro armadio è ancora valida.

Senza Kendall Jenner o Gigi Hadid a catalizzare l’attenzione, non possiamo che promuovere il Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017!!
(Si lo sappiamo che l’anno prossimo ce le becchiamo senza dubbio, ma lasciateci gioire).

Brian, the marriage proposal of our wardrobe is still valid.

Without Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid stealing the show, we cannot but promote the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 !!
(We know that next year we will have to cope with them, but let us rejoice now).
