“Non è un lavoro faticoso.”
Accade spesso che ci venga detto questo, a noi insegnanti: “avete un sacco di vacanze, lavorate poche ore a settimana, blablabla…”. Il bello è che tutto ciò ci viene detto da chi in una classe non ci ha mai messo piede (almeno non dietro alla cattedra, ed a volte mi viene il dubbio che non ci siano stati nemmeno dall’altra parte, da studenti).

It often happens to hear this when you are a teacher as I am: “you have lots of holidays, you only work a few hours a week, blah blah blah…”. The paradox is that people saying these things have never been in a classroom before (at least not behind the teaching desk, and sometimes I even doubt they have neither been on the other side, as students).

Come in fondo succede per tutti i lavori, che da fuori sembrano rose e fiori, anche quello di modella “gode” di questo pregiudizio: fama, soldi, bei vestiti, viaggi sono gli unici aspetti di facciata che vengono subito alla mente. Se però si guarda con attenzione si scopre che esiste un altro lato della medaglia.
Grazie ai social, negli ultimi anni, modelle/i stanno sempre più manifestando il loro dissapore nei confronti dei maltrattamenti delle case di moda, chiedendo delle garanzie e delle condizioni di lavoro migliori (Esiste infatti l’associazione Model Alliance).
And it frequently happens, especially for those jobs appearing a bed of roses from the outside. Models’ job is no exception: fame, money, wonderful clothes, travels are the first aspects coming to your mind, but the reality can’t be more different.
Thanks to social medias, in last years, models have started to be more vocal about the industry’s mistreatment, calling better work conditions and recognized rights (indeed the Model Alliance was recently founded).
La protesta più recente arriva dalla modella Louise Parker, che si è sfogata sul suo profilo Instagram, riguardo alla sua esperienza con Balenciaga: dopo aver viaggiato per 12 ore ed aver accettato di tagliare i capelli, il suo ingaggio per la sfilata è stato cancellato.
La modella ha successivamente spiegato le motivazioni del suo sfogo con queste parole:
“Ho deciso di postare su Instagram e di scrivere qui su quanto successo non perché voglio compassione o perché voglio che si pensi che questo è un evento unico nel suo genere (perché non lo è, cose ben peggiori accadono ogni giorno ai modelli), ma perché sono stanca di essere trattata in questo modo. Se non lavorate nel settore, potrebbe essere difficile da capire, ma immaginate di essere in un ambiente dove non avete nessun controllo virtuale sulla vostra vita lavorativa, dove il vostro corpo e la vostra immagine sono la vostra valuta, dove ti senti costantemente disponibile e dove vieni spesso lasciato allo scuro, inchinandoti a clienti potenti. Lo so che si dovrebbe sputare nel piatto in cui si mangia, ma aprire un dialogo sui social media mi ha aiutato a riacquistare un po’ di quel potere e controllo che cedevo di aver perso”
The most recent call-out comes from model and artist Louise Parker, who took to Instagram to recall her recent casting experience with Balenciaga. After traveling for 12 hours and getting her hair cut, all for the French fashion house, the model’s runway gig was canceled a day a later.
She explains her reasons in an open letter to the brand; these are her words:
“I chose to post about this on Instagram and write about this here not because I want sympathy, or think that this is a unique situation (because it’s not, far worse things happen to models every day), but because I am tired of being treated this way. If you don’t work in the industry, it might be hard to relate, but imagine this in the context of having virtually no control over your working life, where your body and image is your currency, where you constantly feel disposable, and where you’re often left in the dark, bending to powerful clients. I know you shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds you, but reaching out through social media helped me take back some of the power and control I felt I had lost.”
Basta solo un po’ di intelligenza: prima di riempirsi di quei bei stereotipi che ci piacciono tanto, informiamoci, e non diamo per scontato di conoscere il lavoro di qualcuno, se noi non lo abbiamo mai fatto.
Before talking by stereotypes, let’s just get informed, and do not assume we know everything about others’ jobs.
